One of our customers has recently been sending us pictures of their baby who is just switching to real foods.
One of those foods is our ground beef, and he got some of our liver for the baby to try.
All I can say is…
BRAVO!
You might be thinking, liver for a baby? Isn’t that dangerous.
I certainly would cook liver thoroughly like I would any food for a baby but no it’s not dangerous at all and will be a huge advantage for the little guy.
There was a study done way back in 1939 that is super interesting on this topic. They took 15 children who were being weaned from their mothers and offered them a selection of 34 different foods every day.
Since it was 1939 and animal foods and organs were still honored and revered in the culture instead of attacked and reviled like in ours, there were some pretty wild foods offered to the little tikes every day.
Liver
Kidney
Bone marrow
Bone jelly?
Even being the organ connoisseur I am, I don’t know what bone jelly is, but I should probably get some.
So, these babies were allowed to choose their own diets and eat as much as they wanted.
They all tried almost every one of the 34 foods at first and eventually tailored their diet to what they liked.
All of them chose to eat organs.
Their diet wasn’t all organs of course but none of them rejected the organs although a few did reject spinach which has a tiny fraction of the nutrients of liver.
They ate an insane amount of fruit and all chose animal foods.
That might tell us something about whether it’s worth battling with our children over eating their vegetables.
At the end of the experiment none of these toddlers had any significant health problems and all were a healthy weight.
It’s worth noting that they didn’t offer the babies any processed foods. I’m sure these days if you gave children these options next to a bowl of Cap’n Crunch we all know what would happen.
Anyhow, good on ya for introducing your baby to organs when their young and their palette isn’t overloaded with our modern chemical slop.
In awe of children’s inherent wisdom,
John Michael
