This is an example of where most of our food comes from

Our modern food is filled with things that are destroying our health.  At the same time, it’s lacking nutrients we desperately need.  While our nation’s health is plummeting, the ecosystems that support our planet are doing even worse.

No one’s coming to save us.

We’ve seen where top-down solutions have gotten our food system.  It’s up to individual farms and consumers to be the change we want to see in the world.

The “food like substances” (as we’ve come to call them here), that fill our grocery store shelves and giant food companies pockets affect every part of your life including…

  • Our physical well being. We all know that diabetes isn’t genetic, but it’s spreading like wildfire through our population.  People are finally realizing that food and lifestyle are the root of many of our chronic diseases.
  • Our mental health – is living in the most wealthy time in human history really supposed to be this stressful?
  • Rural America – once thriving rural towns are turning into ghost towns all over the country surrounded by millions of acres of big corporation’s mono crops.
  • Our culture – How easy is it to stand up for whats right when you’re dealing with chronic illness?
  • Even our families – Is it possible to be the best parent, sibling, or child we know we can be when we’re stressed and sick all the time?

These are complicated and important problems.  We dig deep into these issues and take the edge off with a little ranch humor in our email newsletter.  Many of our subscribers say it’s the only email they look forward to reading.

There’s a better way

We’re doing things completely different here.  We take care of the soil.  It takes care of the animals (without mountains of vaccines and medications).  Those animals take care of you.  That way you can take care of the things most important to you with the vitality and strength you deserve.

 The next level system

We do everything we possibly can to produce meat that leaves you with no doubt it’s completely different.

  • Our animals spend their entire lives outside in their natural environment.  The diverse landscape our animals live in is completely different from the modern prisons most animals are raised in.
  • We use very tight rotational grazing. This mimics the natural lives of our animals.  This protects the land from over grazing and keeps the animals in clean areas full of healthy diverse forage.
  • We use the bare minimum vaccines and no antibiotics.  Since our animals are constantly kept on clean pastures and eat their natural diet they don’t require all the drugs conventional livestock do to thrive.
  • We source our piglets and calves only from farms that do things the same way.  We’re working towards raising all our animals from birth.  For now we only work with farms that have the same strict standards we do.
  • Complete and total transparency.  If you’re the kind of customer we value, we understand if you don’t take all this on face value.  Customers can come to the farm any time they want and see exactly how we do things.

The result of all this effort is some of the best tasting, healthiest meat on the planet.  Don’t take our word for it.  Order some today and try it for yourself.

Our Animals

Our Animals

Our Grass Fed Beef

  • We try to put ourselves in our cattle’s place with every decision we make.
  • We move our cattle to fresh pastures almost every day during the growing season.  During the winter, we move them about once a week and feed hay in a new spot every day.
  • Our retail meat has never had any antibiotics and we give only the minimum possible vaccinations.  We will not let a sick animal suffer, but any animal that needs to be treated with antibiotics will not be sold to customers.
  • The region we are lucky enough to be in is a unique and powerful place to raise beef.  High elevation and low latitude make for beautiful summers that are relaxing and cool for our cattle.

Want to understand why we do what we do, and how it makes a difference?

Our Pasture Raised Pork

  • We pride ourselves in raising the best of the best pigs when it comes to animal welfare. We buy the best piglets we can find and they spend the rest of their lives outside.
  • We move them to new areas once a week and move their feeder to a new spot every time we refill it, usually every other day.
  • We feed Non-GMO soy free feed with supplements from our neighbors garden waste and local apples during harvest time.
  • Our Pigs are free to dig, scavenge, and forage.  They are constantly digging up bugs and roots and sometimes even eat certain plants.  Their diet is more diverse than most pigs on the planet.
  • The result is a piece of pork that tastes unlike anything you will find in any grocery store in the country.  You won’t be able to go back to flavorless dry pork once you try what a happy healthy pig raised outdoors is like

Meet Your Ranchers

John Michael Montgomery

After many careers including The United States Marine Corps and a career firefighter and paramedic with the Henrico County Fire Department, John has set his sights on his next challenge of ranching.

He is one of the only 73 year olds you will find anywhere that takes no medications and can spend the whole afternoon doing farm work with no trouble.

John helps with the daily farm chores and in the summer you will find him at the farmers market usually surrounded by a big group of our friends and customers.

John Michael Montgomery Jr.

John Michael learned from his dad early about the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle.  By his early twenties he developed a passion for learning everything he could about health and nutrition.

This started him down a windy road that eventually led to ranching.  He soaked up all the knowledge he could about regenerative agriculture and rotational grazing.  Soon he became fascinated in the sheer unrealized power of these ways of growing food for everyone involved.

He’s on a lifelong mission to build a healthy, joyful, resilient community for the animals, Highland County and our clients.

John Michael plans for the growth of the ranch and runs the day to day operations.  He also handles the digital marketing.
